The 2014 Jeep Wrangler is powered by a 285-horsepower V6 engine that produces adequate power for daily city and highway driving. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a five-speed automatic is available. The base Wrangler gets up to 17 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. Those are poor fuel estimates for a compact SUV, but the Wrangler’s four-wheel-drive system is partly to blame for its inefficiency. The system makes the Wrangler one of the most capable off-road vehicles on the market, but it also makes for an unpleasant, harsh ride on paved roads.
